01:27 am: Discussion on where to order cheap textbooks online
I came across this on a site I monitor via RSS:
Very US-centric but there are a few gems on where to buy textbooks at lower prices than the campus bookstore in the comments:

03:56 am: MSU President Opposed to MSU Accountability Act
Attached is an Sil Article. Read it and see what the MSU President thinks of Accountability.

I have been initiated since I announced that I was moving this act at General Assembly. I have been confronted by members of the SRA, Board of Directors, and full-time staff of the MSU. A smear campaign has been engaged in by some of these people. I have had students that are associated with a member of the BoD call me a “Fucking Asshole”, “Fucking Douche bag”, and a “Fucking Idiot” in the last 24 hours.

The VP Finance attempted to dismiss me as Disability Coordinator representing and advocating for students (which is a volunteer position that I give about 12 hours a week to) Wednesday night but was overturn 2 hours by the MSU President. I was asked to keep quiet about it by members of the SRA and BoD in order to prevent damaging the image of the MSU. They attempted to appeal to my idealist view that the MSU can be reformed from within. I honestly believed the MSU President was he said he would deal with the issue. They said I had to understand that tensions are high right now and that the VP Finance was just lashing out at me because of how upset everyone is at my support of the General Assembly especially in light of the fact that two Engineers have moved to change the name of Quarters. I thought that was seriously the reason, it turns out that it has to do with accountability.

They can say all they want about accountability and caring about student opinion every single time they want our vote but when it comes time to prove it, they fight to intimate students.

Many members of the SRA and the Board of Directors have been meeting in the MSU office every day since the MSU Accountability Act to figure out how to stop the MSU General Assembly. They have been looking at Roberts Rules of Order to try and find out every single dirty procedural trick they can pull to try to grind the democratic process to a halt. They have been talking about the following procedure to as they told me “prevent voter fraud”.
All MSU members will be checked against a printout list of the entire MSU membership and their name crossed off one by one. They claim this is because people that are not MSU members could be taking Membership stickers off of their friends that are MSU members and trying to vote at General Assembly.

Can you imagine the line-up and the extremely long time it will take?
They have also talked about challenging every item on the agenda in order to try to remove them. They are also planning to filibuster every item on the agenda and to talk for the maximum amount of time they can in the hope that MSU members will grow tired or have to go to class so that there will be less than the 550 members required in Quarters for the meeting to proceed.

We must remain calm and peaceful at all times. To be honest, by sending this email I have stopped them because they will try to claim that I am crazy and seeing conspiracies where none exist. They will claim I am lying and continue the smear campaign. It is up to you what you believe. I feel that this practice needs to end and they need to listen to students.

I will tell you there are two SRA members that have been fully supportive of the democratic process and that I know for sure are not involved in these attempts to stop student democracy. They are Andy Moonsammy and Chrissy Taylor. I want to publicly thank them for their support of the process. They are the only two to talk to me and tell me to hold out and not to be intimated.

I need every MSU member to come out and end this practice of taking “gifts” from people that want student money and this pathetic attitude that the MSU is a corporation and that I am entitled to my “gifts” and how dare students tell us what to do.

I will quote today’s Sil article which talks about the MSU Accountability Act.

Accountability

Another item outlines a code of ethics, if passed and ratified, would apply to all MSU employees and volunteers, as well as the volunteers and employees of MSU operations, services, and subsidiaries. This item calls for an independent arm of the MSU which would investigate the actions and decisions of employees and volunteers accountable to the MSU.
Tommy Piribauer, MSU president, opposes this item. He said that section three, which prohibits MSU employees from accepting gifts from suppliers, may deter MSU board members from performing additional duties. Piribauer says that the board regularly put in more hours than are required in the job description.
“The accountability act is going to make leadership in the MSU so unbearable that people aren’t going to put in any time over and above what they’re actually supposed to” warned Piribauer.
Last year John McGowan, MSU business manager, Shano Mohan, former MSU president, and Umair Khan, former vice-president finance, accepted box seats to a World Cup of Hockey final from Gallivan and Associates, a dental and health plan company bidding for a contract with the MSU.
“Under the current system there is no guidance of what we expect in this situation,” says Joey Coleman, diversity coordinator. Coleman says he put this motion forward because of concerns over MSU accountability.
Piribauer said he believes that such perks should come with the job: “That’s part of the advantage of actually being a board of director or a staff member, and that is part of the reason why board members are willing to put in so much time.”

This is what he tells us in public!!!! What is he thinking in private? The fact is that the entire BoD knows the MSU Presidents position on this issue and none of them,
The three Vice Presidents: John Popham, VP Admin, Jeff Mohan, VP Finance, Stephanie Murray, VP Education have said anything!!!

SECTION THREE – MSU CODE OF ETHICS AND CONDUCT

3 GIFTS AND BENEFITS
3.1 No official shall accept a fee, advance, gift or personal benefit that is connected directly or indirectly with the performance of his or her duties of office.
3.2 Any gift received from a supplier/third party shall be declared and given to the MSU.
3.2.1 The MSU shall raffle/auction any gifts from a supplier/third party and donate the monies to Student Financial Aid & Scholarships for undergraduate student bursaries.
3.3 Exceptions to the aforementioned non-acceptance of gifts or personal benefits by officials in relation to their official duties are:
3.3.1 Such gifts or benefits that normally accompany the responsibilities of office and are received as an incident of protocol, custom, or social obligations;
3.3.2 Suitable memento of a function honouring the official;
3.3.3 Food and beverages consumed at banquets, receptions or similar events; and
3.3.4 Benefits internal to the MSU (such as a reasonable discount).

Since the board has been meeting constantly since the Accountability Act was proposed attempting to figure out how to stop it, what does this mean about them? Why was it that the Sil does not have any quotes from the MSU Board of Directors in favour of being accountable? I cannot see the Sil not having tried to reach them. I know from experience that the MSU President always consults with all the other VP’s on matter of importance. I hope that we get something from Mr. Popham, our President-Elect condemning this, if only because students are getting active against these practices.

We need every single MSU member that can make it to come out and take back our Student Union.
Rarely in life does the opportunity present itself to end unethical practices in government and the opportunity is now.
I have done everything I can; now it is up to the membership to decide if they want our union back.

Be there:

WEDNESDAY MARCH 22nd 2006
2:30pm QUARTERS BAR AND GRILL
Doors will open at 2:00pm so be there early to make sure that we start taking back the Student Union right at 2:30pm

Forward this to all MSU members you know.

It is our Student Union, its time for us to take it back!

I have attached files to this email.

MSU Accountability Act: MSU_Accountability_Act.pdf

Add to this:

A motion was proposed that MSU SRA minutes be put on the MSU website within days of the meeting marked draft until approved.

The last time minutes were publicity put on the MSU website to be available for students was almost a year ago: http://www.msu.mcmaster.ca/sra/sraminutes.php
Executive Board last summer: http://www.msu.mcmaster.ca/sra/ebminutes.php

I have also been asked to add a link to By-Law 7 Student Academic Council which has been ignored all year: http://www.msu.mcmaster.ca/cbp/2005-2006/Bylaw_7_-_Student_Academic_Council.pdf

04:31 pm: Wait a Second!!!! What is this

From The Manitoban:

Missing computers will return this fall

Students who rely on library computers should not be dismayed by the bright orange signs in libraries: the computers have been temporarily taken away to bring them up to speed for the high demand expected in the fall.

Susan Miller, the associate director of Information Services and Systems, said that the temporary removal is for the better.

“It’s just that we’ve had to remove computers that didn’t meet the security standards of the university because they were old. We have received funds now to replace those computers, and they will be in this fall, [but] not at the beginning of term, because we can’t get them in that fast,” said Miller.

The administration has provided money to upgrade the existing computer service, although no more additional computers will be added.

However, Miller noted, with the ever-increasing wireless capability on campus, any number of personal computers can now be used in five libraries. Additional libraries may soon be equipped with wireless technology.

WHAT - NO NEW COMPUTERS???????? I THOUGHT THAT $150 per student TECH FEE WAS GOING TO BE PUT INTO TECH!!!!!
Yeah, that is right, the TECH FEE is just a CASH GRAB!

04:18 pm: A Good Letter to the Editor of the Manitoban

Christen Roos, the UMSU Councillor representing students with disabilities as written a good letter to the editor which is printed in the current edition of The Manitoban

Putting pressure on the government

There have been some headlines in the Manitoban regarding the University of Manitoba Students’ Union. In the last issue, an editor raised concern over the recent matter regarding the ancillary fee increase, and how UMSU is unable to effectively represent students on this matter (“Who will speak up for students now?” 20/07/2005). What should be noted is that originally the fees were going to be increased by $465, but, because of negotiations and advocating for the students, the fees were dropped to $150. Unfortunately, we couldn’t get the fees reduced to zero, but there is a big difference between those two numbers, which was no doubt in part due to the pressure students put on the government and the administration. To say that we had no role is far from the truth.

Rather than claiming that anything we try to do as students won’t help, getting involved by educating ourselves on the issues and encouraging our representatives in government to increase funding and do what’s right for students seems like a much better route in dealing with the ancillary fee issue.

One would be hard-pressed to believe that the government would have just gone ahead and decreased the fees by providing our institution with an influx of money (something the students’ union has been calling for over the last year) had it not been for student pressure. Government is political and they make political decisions based on how much political capital each decision is worth.

Part of the reason that health care presently gets more attention than education is because Canadians make a lot more noise about health care spending than about education spending. These are the people that vote, and the government knows that. Unfortunately, voter turnout among young people is still quite low, which has been changing for the better, though not fast enough.

While I think the voice of students in the province is growing, I encourage more students to get involved with issues related to post-secondary education so that we can ensure that, as students, we have an even stronger presence and voice in the upcoming year. Working together is the only way we can achieve our goals.

Sincerely,
Christen Roos

07:33 pm: The New Conservative Party of Canada Ads

The Conservative Party of Canada has launched new ads today.

There are four ads:

Health Care

This ad had potential and the Tories have blown it. It starts well.

Rona Ambrose MP says to Peter Mackay: "Peter you know waiting times for surgery used to be 9 weeks, now it is 4 months." Mackay responds: "And yet the Liberals say that their fixing health care"

A great start. They have told me that Health Care has got worse under the Liberals. Now you have to tell me what you are going to do to improve it... I am interested in hearing how.... Instead the Conversatives blow it now.

Ambrose replies: "A drowning man will say anything."

You have to be kidding me... that is how ... what does that have to do with anything!!! I guess the Conservatives love reinforcing a negative childish image of politics. Was that supposed to make me laugh????? It did not, just turned me off of the rest of the ad.

Now we finally have an appearance by Harper: "You know its funny because the public health system is the only one most Canadians have ever used. Its the only one my family's ever used. We've just got to make it work."

This is good.. I am listening again... what are you going to do ... .take it away:

Ambrose: "The Goal is to make sure every family .. . " interrupts McKay: "and regular families, not just rich families" back to Ambrose: "get the quality health care they need."
Harper: "Well that's the plan and its time Canadian knew it."
Voice-over: "Stand Up for Canada"

The ad had potential but the Conservatives do not say what they are going to do. It really had potential because the Liberals are weak on this one. Harper had a great chance to say "unlike Paul Martin who uses private health care in Quebec!" The new slogan is good... definitely a good way to counter the Liberal's the Liberal Party's values are Canadian Values... I did not consider stealing a Canadian Value like the Liberals do right now...

Child Care

This one is just plain bad.... the sidebar on the Internet Ad is good... it explains a position and why they do not like the current plan but the video is what is truly important... the sidebar says: "The Liberal government has promised to spend $5 billion dollars to build a national system of institutional childcare. The Liberal plan supports only one choice - 9am to 5pm institutional childcare - that leaves thousands of parents behind, such as shift workers, low income parents, parents who live in rural areas and stay-at-home parents."
So I am thinking that the video would say these points or at least come close.

Harper: "It just amazes me that they just don't get it, raising kids is tough effort when you are working"
Ambrose: "Well, I know women today do not want a five billion dollar child-care bureaucracy, we want a choice in child-care."
Harper: "Everywhere I go that is exactly what I hear, just put the money where it can help. We do not have to tell people how to raise their children, we just want to give them a way to do what is right for their families"
Helena Geurgis MP: "Exactly"

Not good not bad so far ... but it is falling flat... are you opposed to National Child Care or Not ... what are you doing ??
But here is probably the best punchline in the entire add campaign:

Harper: "And you know if we stop all the waste and mismanagement, maybe our children will not be saddled with the debt."

Great, there you are something... he shoots he scores. How about that for touching an emotional issue, passing the debt down! There the Conservatives are at least getting it somewhat... now they just have to tell us what they are going to do....

06:43 pm: The Confusion with UMSU fees

I have been listening on the blogosphere as UMSU members vent their confusion and frustrations around the mystery $5 UMSU fee.

The mystery fee is actually a $5 increase to UMSU fees that was past by UMSU Council in March. The increase is a reflection of the increased cost of event insurance that UMSU has to pay for all student groups on campus. Insurance rates have skyrocketed since 2001 yet UMSU fees had remained the same. The choice that Council had to make was between having insurance and increase UMSU fees by $5 or no students events could occur that had alcohol served. Council debated this at length and every other alternative was explored. There was no other way that would not have hurt other UMSU services or would not have resulted in cuts to UMSU events. As such, Council tried to find other ways, took as long as we could to decide to increase fees, and because the decision was made at the end of last regular session the fee increase was put into the University registration fees system at the last minute resulting in the confusion that exists now.

In short, the $5 was passed by Council and is entirely going to help cover the increased costs of insurance for student events.

Lastly, for the record I voted in favour of this increase after consulting my College Student Association and hearing there was very strong support for the continuation of student events on campus.

11:19 pm: Smile vs Angry

I was showing a friend the search engine that I use on my site.
I decided that I would pick a random word: "smile"
I received no results for smile
I then put in "angry"
I got 6 hits for that.
I have concluded that I need to smile more often.
I will be smiling in two weeks when I am in Guelph with all my friends at Moo U!
